I remember when it meant something absolutely extraordinary, and now it has been demoted down to #8220;cool.#8221; I#8217;ve never used the word in out of my life except to describe schooner sailing, writing, horseback riding, rock climbing, and camping (originally only for sailing). Watching news and magazine was an #8220;a-ha#8221; moment for me. Stupendous post! Actually I was thinking of writing one along the same lines.

There is so much content out there we have to grab the readers attention. Graphic, descriptive phrasing is a way to take them by 1st pass, the throat and force feed them what they need. American Express Essay? #128521; Thanks for the eloquent reminder! Nice idea,Jon. Synonyms are GOOD! Whee! (or Wow!) However, the editor in me has to ask about #8220;pommel.#8221; I bet you intended to use, #8220;pummel,#8221; which means to hit someone repeatedly. #8220;Pommel#8221; is a knob or protruding part on soil porosity a sword or a saddle. Good catch! Fixed. Thank you Jon! I#8217;ll definitely file this for safekeeping! #128512; Thanks for this awesome resource! I have a short memory, so if some of 1st pass metabolism these I present to you are already lists above, I apologize in advance. John? Some more of metabolism my favorite words: Then I list these: Scott free (as in getting away with murder, r@pe, etc.) And also mild swear words that help me keep my blog PG-13: Jerk (in place of @sshole) Tail or booty (in place of @ss) Piece of tail (instead of book piece of 1st pass metabolism @ss) Boink, Bang, Screw, (instead of f*ck) Frick (instead of f*ck) Freaking (instead of f*cking) Bloody freaking miracle (instead of f*cking miracle) Sweet lies from Hell. Fresh lies from Essay example hell (or fresh hell) Oh, and of course #8212; last but not least #8212; Nice! I#8217;ll have to 1st pass metabolism add some of these. Soil Porosity? sweet lies from 1st pass hell is my new #8220;scam#8221; phrase#8230;. Essay Example? thx. I use your headline hacks PDF all the time. In fact, I have officially made it is mandatory reading for 1st pass, all new members of my team. Salamander? Now the lists in these posts are the perfect supplement to help me and my team take our copy-writing to the next level. Awesome! Thanks so much for salamander symbolism, continuing to create such great resources. All the best! Headlines as mandatory reading? Hot damn. I want to come work at your company. #128578; I think you need a list of 1st pass metabolism words that evoke an image or feeling like #8220;Gobsmacked.#8221; impressive top of my list. Out Of The Shadows Book? thx. Thanks Jon.

I do know that the 1st pass metabolism, power words can make a big difference. Tannen Theory? Thanks for the list. 1st Pass Metabolism? Now have it printed and American Express Essay example, good to go with more of your great help from you. Hi Debbie, definitely some super-powerful power words in your blog title! :-]] Glad my parents, in what I presume was a back-to-the-future move ahead of its time, got hold of your advice just in time for me #8230; lol. 1st Pass? I can#8217;t take all the soil porosity, credit for metabolism, it though.

The truth is American, Jon pretty much came up with that one, with his blogging class I took. It sure is paying off for me. Actually i just got an email from someone that wants to advertise on my site. 1st Pass Metabolism? What can i say, Jon is good with the words. Thanks again and hope you have a great day or evening. Debbie, you have definitely utilized Jon#8217;s lessons well! Your headings are irresistible! I challenge the salamander, young and 1st pass, inexperienced to stay away…lol!

Jon, a great post! Tony Robbins also refers to power words. Looking at your list, I see authentic listed under #8220;safe#8221;. I never thought of tannen theory it that way before. Maybe having worked in the corporate world, authentic seems more audacious to 1st pass me. Now, I am going to have to change the tannen theory, tagline for metabolism, my site. #128539; I love the concept of juxtaposition and confluence. Other words I love are those that convey a transitory magical feeling elusive, evanescent, fleeting. I am going to have to grab your headline hacks PDF. These are delightful (would that be a power word?), but I#8217;m curious about salamander symbolism, one thing: there are a lot of metabolism adjectives in this list. Online marketers and copywriters keep saying it#8217;s best to be simple while also being compelling, which means leaving out adjectives when they#8217;re not necessary. But it seems you#8217;re making the case that they ARE necessary to a degree, right?

Otherwise people won#8217;t emotionally be pulled in soil porosity by what you#8217;re reading. That#8217;s absolutely true. #128521; Thanks! Glad to see my love of adjectives doesn#8217;t have to be ENTIRELY thrown out the window. Metabolism? #128578; I feel like I#8217;m on book a radio call in show so I#8217;ll start by saying Long time reader, first time commentor. 1st Pass Metabolism? LOL. Outsiders Summary? AWESOME and I mean AWESOME list!

I#8217;ll be using these for sure! I have a few to 1st pass metabolism add if I may: And I seem to be using this one a lot lately: Some great words there. Example? Thanks for sharing! Your Royal Awesomeness, hi #8230; with breathtaking #8220;Thanks!#8221; for your sensational list. I#8217;ve been bombarded with devastatingly boring power word lists ever since the metabolism, last millennium, but Your Royal Awesomeness#8217;s volatile compilation of power words is strikingly different.

It#8217;s eye-openingly intelligent. Re the soil porosity, staggering importance of (power) words. #8220;In the beginning was the word#8221;. Not only is it tantalizingly clear #8220;what part of #8216;in the beginning#8217; do you not understand?#8221; it#8217;s also a secret and 1st pass, therefore hypnotic wisdom of every sage and wisdom that ever existed, across all time, space and outsiders book, religions, gracefully discounting the usual few exceptions. Yet, I shamelessly admit [in truth I#8217;m thrilled to admit], it took my genius self a revoltingly long time to a) notice, b) to believe and c) to metabolism really believe it #8230; and experience the magic of belief in power words. Now your evil list will quadruple the experience, no doubt about it. Book Summary? Hence my recession-proof thanks. But I see Your Gifted Awesomeness by 1st pass, now is getting over-powered or disgustingly bored likely both. So let me hurriedly take quick leave #8230; by crookedly adding the only other intelligent list of power words in my trusted hands is from Tony Robbins [Unleash the Giant Within]. He lists words in two columns: #8220;good word#8221; and #8220;great word#8221;.

Cannot reproduce it here whoppingly true because I only symbolism, have it as a guaranteed jpg file. But if anyone wants the bonanza of a copy, just holler and make sure it includes your prized email, and a power word or two :-] Rebecca Scott Boddie. Great list. 1st Pass? My additions: Jon, mind-blowing stuff! #128578; How about soil porosity, #8220;because#8221;? Tony Robbins first gave me insight into the power of this word. Years later, Brian Clark reminded me. Metabolism? Tony Robbins suggested doing a little experiment to see how powerful #8220;because#8221; was #8230; Go to salamander the front of any line of people waiting for something have a really good excuse ready for why you need to be served [or whatever] first and add #8220;because#8221; like this #8230; #8220;Do you all mind if I go first because #8230;[enter good excuse] my little girl#8217;s lost her teddy and 1st pass, she thinks he might be in here.#8221; Or .. Other power words: Please. May I? Thank-you. The Chaser John? You#8217;re fired! #8230; possibly not in that order #128578; Great post Jon, thanks#8230; I#8217;ll be using it with your Headline Hacks report to juice up my headlines. Tony Robbins has a very effective practice to change emotional states by changing our usual, self-talk vocabulary to one peppered with power words; they#8217;re a potent influence.

Fab list. This is a really great list. I have been working on metabolism improving my writing and this should really help. Thank you for posting this. Dear “His Royal Awesomeness”! What an impressive and john collier, powerful list of perfectly categorized word groups! I#8217;m sending you a H-U-G ! I#8217;m another fan of #8220;Headline Hacks#8221; that I originally downloaded in March 2012 — it#8217;s been like a word bible!

Holy Forgotten Bonanza Batman! This article has titillated my limp mind! Wow, what else can I say that hasn#8217;t already been said? Like all those before me, I copied this into a word doc (including most of the comment lists) for even more reference material! Thank you! Thanks for metabolism, not including curse words. The Chaser John? They#8217;re like that broken screwdriver you keep in the drawer. It might work, but it will probably just make someone really angry at you for using it.

Also, I like: #8220;carnage#8221;, #8220;rock star#8221;, #8220;inevitable#8221;, #8220;betray#8221;, #8220;putrid#8221;, #8220;rotten#8221;, #8220;rat#8221;, #8220;patriot#8221;, #8220;made in America#8221;, #8220;Draconian#8221; (when I can get away with it), and especially #8220;insanity#8221; (because it can be good or bad depending on 1st pass context). Jon, I love your article and your list of power words is incredible. I am sure I will be using it all the time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. It#8217;s always greatly appreciated! Let#8217;s face it. Everything we do in life relates to our emotions. What this list of words does is help us to communicate better as writers and salamander, capture those emotions from our readers. I offer my sincere appreciation for this list and metabolism, will be sure to tannen theory keep it in a safe place along with sharing this great article. Wishing everyone a great inspiration filled day, Hi Jon.

Another staggeringly useful post that will help us to 1st pass rise to victory. Many thanks. ideals (I wonder where I got those last 3) I can#8217;t see them in out of the shadows your list- but I may have missed them. This list is almost as useful as Headline Hacks. Magical! Thanks again.

Jane. Excellent. Metabolism? I am a great believer in power words and write and rewrite constantly before posting. Thanks for your list.I will add to mine. Great post. I#8217;m gobsmacked! (Just had to American Express example repeat that word.) Inspired to contribute an #8221; Old Coots#8217; Cahoots#8221; annex: I worry about this type of guide as it lacks so much that is fundamental to 1st pass metabolism the craft of tannen theory good writing, such as pace, tempo and punctuation. Metabolism? #8220;How to become an instantly better writer,#8221; it says, #8220;it#8217;s simple: Use power words.#8221; If it were that simple there wouldn#8217;t be writers of the calibre we celebrate.

If painting were a metaphor, it would say: #8220;it#8217;s simple. Use the colour red.#8221; Picasso painted some of his most famous works in muted blue#8217;s and grey. It goes on to cite a speech of Winston Churchill#8217;s where he uses #8220;power words#8221; yet it brushes over the fact that those words were used in the context of war a subject of power in itself. it also ignores the power of Churchill#8217;s voice his pace and tempo and the people who were used to imitate him (there is good evidence that his radio speeches were recorded by a voice artist imitating him). The Shadows Book? I see so many bloggers applying similar rules while ignoring the power of developing their own style and 1st pass metabolism, voice. It is the salamander, only way to 1st pass truly stand out because too many bloggers are taking attention grabbing guides like this to out of heart. 1st Pass? I understand what you#8217;re saying but blogging is an summary advanced form of communication that is entirely different than traditional styles of writing. Blogging is meant to attract readers and gain attention because of it#8217;s intimate and quick to read format.

What Jon#8217;s post does is it tells you how to 1st pass be a better blogger, not to be a better #8220;writer#8221; in the traditional writing sense. Salamander Symbolism? Go and read any newspaper and then go read their blog. I#8217;m sure you#8217;ll find very quickly that they are merely curating content with the odd piece thrown in and calling it a blog. 1st Pass Metabolism? That#8217;s not blogging. That#8217;s Journalism. I was surfing a writers website and looked at their guest post submission guidelines. It asked for a degree in communications and posts must be written in AP style. Since when does AP style have to do with blogging? I think too many people (along with the so called blogging experts)seem to confuse blogging with the writing we were all taught in school. Two completely different things.

Jon doesn#8217;t do that. Out Of The Shadows Book? He has a very clear understanding of what a blog is and what traditional writing is. If you want to write a better fiction novel, screenplay, business letter or speech, take a college level writing class. Metabolism? If you want to learn how to blog, learn from the shadows book guys who live it. Just my two cents. Thanks for 1st pass, your reply, Michael. Writing forms the basis of blogging, as it does journalism, play writing, speech writing and so on. Soil Porosity? All of 1st pass metabolism these forms employ words, which are crafted by what we all call WRITING, to attract readers or listeners and gain attention. ALL writing, not just blogging. Soil Porosity? Even Jon#8217;s headline states: 317 Power Words That’ll Instantly Make You a Better WRITER.

Not a blogger. A WRITER. People may believe blogging needs to 1st pass metabolism be shorter and punchier to retain peoples attention, but a 2000 word long blog can retain peoples attention if it is outsiders, WRITTEN well. Using these so called power words does not make you a better writer. 1st Pass? The power of a written piece does not come from individual words, it comes from the context the words are written in; how they relate to other words; sentences; paragraphs and the subject they are describing. Michael, You say: #8220;I think too many people (along with the so called blogging experts)seem to outsiders summary confuse blogging with the 1st pass metabolism, writing we were all taught in school.#8221; This is a ridiculous assumption. The fact that bloggers can string sentences together is a direct result of the chaser john collier that schooling.

Without it, blogging would not exist. Indeed, Anton Crone. I#8217;m a novelist myself and come from metabolism a world where good, contextual, syntactic writing is as important as vocabulary. But vocabulary#8217;s important too! This list may not touch on everything that makes a good writer, but it specializes in one thing. Why not take that college level writing class Michael mentioned if you want the rest of the picture? And I#8217;m sure there are bloggers out there who specialize in other elements… I#8217;ve got one more word that should definitely be added to your power list.

Ben Casnocha just did an entire post on the power of the the chaser john collier, word #8220;yet#8221; and it#8217;s ability to 1st pass metabolism motivate. Pretty convincing, no? No. It is not a #8220;power word#8221; in the context of the soil porosity, blog piece above. It is made #8220;powerful#8221; by metabolism, its application in the sentences or phrases mentioned in the piece you reference. It is just a word, otherwise you may as well say #8220;the#8221; is a power word, or any other word for American Essay example, that matter. Looking at the words above, a great number of them require context to 1st pass give them #8220;power#8221;. For example: gift; mother; silly, belief.

Some of collier them aren#8217;t even words. IRS? For crying out loud. Some are more than one word: Sick and tired; marked down? I know something that would make me a better writer#8230; Taking this article as well as some of your other awesome basic writing technique articles, and putting them to practice in a system each time I write! Why do we fail to do what we know to metabolism do, especially when someone helps us out (gives us the answers? DOH#8230; I am determine to get this right#8230;. Thanks for another great one, Jon! Thanks very much for this post.

I am always looking for descriptive words to flood my readers#8217; senses. Ok, maybe that was a tad too dramatic, but I think you understand what I mean. Excellent article Jon .Thanks for soil porosity, sharing these power words. Varina Suellen Plonski. Reading some of the metabolism, comments makes me think some of Essay example them missed the point. These words are power words because they evoke an immediate, emotional and visceral response.

That is their power! One of the most powerful words I know is not itself a power word; it does not itself have the power of the words in your blog, it is instead a word that describes them. The word is NUANCE. Why say #8216;red#8217; when you can evoke a more emotional, visceral response by saying #8216;scarlet#8217;? The smell of 1st pass metabolism blood is symbolism, one thing; the smoky copper scent of metabolism blood is entirely another. Those descriptive, nuanced words are words of power. That#8217;s what these words are. Thank you so much for adding to my store!

Favorite FB pic I saw lately: Never underestimate the seductive power of a decent vocabulary! Great content! The #8220;power word#8221; in American Express Essay the title is what got my attention. All of the above. Incredible post and list, Jon. Peak/peek as in summit or peaked his curiosity. The latter: Get a Special Peek into Our [goods before [the masses]#8230;I#8217;ve stashed some more away and will come back and add them. Though another source is Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens. He could come up with some doozies! I#8217;ll look through those as well.

We, as novelists, are taught not to use the $10 word when the metabolism, $1 one would work (thank you, Hemingway). Book Summary? Also, you tend to hype the living gold out of your articles. Contrary to metabolism most other authors, you keep your promises of awesomeness. But Germans are a little allergic to hype. The Chaser? The last time Germans believed in hype, in metabolism particular political hype, it didn#8217;t go over so well for them and even less for the rest of the john, world. A million dollar idea it would be great to have a power word thesauras online. essay printmaking Editor's note: The following essay was rekeyed and reprinted on October 18, 2008 in Resource Library with permission of the author. 1st Pass? If you have questions or comments regarding the essay, please contact the author at: Telephone: 949-481-7553 American Printmakers and the Federal Art Project. T hroughout the nineteenth century, printmaking in the United States was largely limited to commercial illustration and mass produced reproductions of example paintings. Americans were avid consumers of the popular lithographs distributed by Currier and Ives, known as printmakers to the American people, and reproductions of John James Audubon's studies of animals and birds were equally popular. Metabolism? However, printmaking became a vital form of artistic expression during the years of the government sponsored Federal Art Project (FAP) a unit within the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was established in 1935 as a coordinating agency for American Express, projects designed to 1st pass metabolism assure employment in as many fields of work as possible, including the arts.

Because artists, like other unemployed workers, could apply for WPA programs, art was recognized as an salamander, occupation important to society and, for 1st pass, printmakers, Project support included access to government sponsored workshops equipped with presses, materials and, when needed, instruction. As a result, during the 1930s, American printmaking gained new prominence as a vital form of expression, and printmakers created a strong artistic vocabulary that influenced post World War II developments. They produced high quality etchings, lithographs, wood cuts, wood engravings and, later, screen prints that were socially relevant and often conceptually innovative. All FAP sponsored works were intended for distribution to public buildings, including schools, libraries, and hospitals. Salamander Symbolism? In contrast to easel paintings, sculptures, and permanently installed murals that were one-time, unique events, each print image was replicated in 1st pass metabolism editions of at john, least 25 (or more) impressions. Prints, therefore, were a practical and inexpensive means of complying with the Project's defined mission to make original works of art accessible to the general public.

Artists responded directly to the troubled conditions that were experienced to some extent by the country's entire population, but most profoundly by the middle class majority, and prints could effectively communicate the Depression experience, in visual terms, to 1st pass metabolism a large and artistically unsophisticated viewing public. Salamander? Because painting and sculpture could achieve only limited exposure while prints had a large and diverse audience, many Project administrators supported printmaking as the logical process for creating art for the people. Establishment of Graphic Arts Divisions within the Project also gave printmakers opportunities previously reserved for painters and metabolism sculptors. American Essay Example? Few (if any) prints were produced by the preceding relief programs for artists, including the Public Works of Art Project, followed by the Treasury Department Art Projects and the Treasury Relief Project. Therefore, until they were eligible for FAP support, printmakers had a limited market, a limited audience, and severely limited resources. However, as Graphic Arts workshops were organized, printmakers became members of larger communities of artists with shared purposes. In addition, FAP workshops made it possible to metabolism explore techniques that were previously difficult or impossible because of equipment costs and lack of adequate facilities. Salamander? Project workshops provided space, high quality presses, necessary materials, skilled master printers, and fostered mutually supportive communities in which artists could exchange ideas and offer each other critical appraisal of evolving works. 1st Pass? The workshop system also nurtured the book summary embryonic individual styles and experimental processes that contributed to the influence of print techniques on the work of Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol and other major late-modern figures of the 1950s and 1960s.

If the silk screen workshop had not been a part of the metabolism Graphic Arts Division of New York City's Project, it is book, unlikely that screen printing would have been so quickly accepted as the equal of etching, wood cut, and lithography. Incorporating color in woodcuts and lithographs was another experimental process for American printmakers, many of whom had traveled and 1st pass metabolism studied in Europe and had seen the vibrant, often discordant, colors of example German Expressionist woodcuts. Some, including Benton Spruance, Louis Lozowick and Reginald Marsh had worked at the Atelier Desjobert in Paris where they learned the intricacies of the two-color lithograph. Metabolism? The Project made it possible to explore such unfamiliar directions by tannen theory, allowing artists the 1st pass freedom to work without the need to soil porosity market their efforts. However, government commissions, obligated them to 1st pass metabolism explore independent directions within the context of out of book a socially conscious art. Uncomfortable with European modernist directions, and reluctant to investigate abstraction in its various forms, most Project artists expressed their responses to political and social effects of the Depression in modified forms of realism. Metabolism? Their subjects were drawn from the impact on society of the national economic crisis that accounted for widespread unemployment, bread lines, and the need for a wide range of welfare programs. Many emphasized the individual in contrast to group experience, calling attention to the identity of each human being engaged in productive labor, social protest, or standing in tannen theory a food line. 1st Pass Metabolism? By affirming the worth and contribution of the the chaser individual worker, artists found validation of their own efforts.

This was particularly true of printmakers who were assigned to government sponsored workshops in which they had the freedom to explore technical innovations as well as individual directions of professional development within a community of other artists with like intentions. In 1938, Holger Cahill, the Project's national director, said that it would be possible to reconstruct a visual history of the period of the Depression from prints created by artists on the Project. [1] Inasmuch as the history of the Depression is closely associated with the history of labor in the United States, and metabolism labor is a prevalent theme in Project prints, Cahill's statement is justified. Because they developed a strong interest in the perspective of the laborer, both employed and unemployed, printmakers created the strongest and most eloquent visual statements of the Depression's effects on rural and out of the shadows urban working Americans. Furthermore, because Project administrators classified artists as unemployed workers in need of 1st pass federal assistance, their identities became so closely associated with the workers they portrayed that many of the anonymous laborers in their prints may be interpreted as self portraits. To assume, however, that the work produced under FAP sponsorship was primarily democratic in nature and purpose is to limit the presence and salamander purposes of the artists, especially printmakers, who thought of metabolism themselves as workers. The familiar laborer who appears often in paintings and prints of the 1930s is a muscular figure pictured either integrating with, or exerting human intellectual control over, the tannen theory machines and tools with which he works.

In addition, many FAP artists had a particular interest in representing the viewpoint of people to 1st pass metabolism whom work was a fundamental objective in itself. All workers wanted, and deserved, fair compensation for their efforts, but just as important were the soil porosity rewards intrinsic to their chosen vocations. Because it demanded an metabolism, integration of Express artist and craftsperson, and involved the public with both process and metabolism product, printmaking was arguably the most democratic of the creative arts supported by the Project. Although the tannen theory nation's consciousness had not yet been raised about race and gender issues, women as well as racial and ethnic minorities were prominent participants in Project workshops. Metabolism? For example, a large number of women are listed in Graphic Arts Division records, and printmaking was included in the Harlem Community Art Center programs. It is soil porosity, of particular interest that 40% of 1st pass artists who received FAP commissions between 1936 and 1940 were women. Project committees did not demonstrate discernible gender bias when reviewing applicants, and out of many Project administrators were women. Although women who worked in offices and factories were often, during the Depression years, required to 1st pass yield their jobs to unemployed men, there is out of the shadows, no evidence that women associated with the FAP experienced similar exclusion from assignments or commissions. Government sponsorship of the arts gave American artists an unprecedented sense of identity and self esteem.

Most Americans regarded the visual arts as elitist, creating an estrangement between artist and public. Many associated painting and sculpture with European aristocracy, monarchy and the papacy and, therefore, inconsistent with democratic ideals. A statement in The People's Art Guild of 1918 declared that artists and 1st pass people were following divergent directions, and soil porosity the resultant separation was causing both to lose. The same document noted that the aesthetic deprivation of the 1st pass public was as complete as the isolation felt by artists. By including artists among the American unemployed who could apply for assistance, the government assured them of a social identity in 1st pass a way that the public understood and accepted. Art is a normal social growth rooted deeply in soil porosity the life of mankind and extremely sensitive to environments created by 1st pass metabolism, human society wrote Cahill in his catalog introduction for the 1936 exhibition New Horizons in American Art, a visual survey of the Project's first year. [2] He went on to say that art cannot be kept alive by a few artists so committed they are willing to endure social and physical deprivation; their survival depends on patronage. [3] Cahill often invoked John Dewey's philosophy to substantiate his argument that art, as the most civilized means of communication, provides an efficient means of entering sympathetically into the most profound life experiences of tannen theory all people. He also believed that the art produced under government sponsorship should be distinctively American with no stylistic references to European modernist developments. However, patronage inevitably imposes conditions upon its recipients. Although the Project's primary mission was included within the large New Deal effort to create work relief programs designated to 1st pass revive the economy, not to subsidize the symbolism arts, still it established specific criteria that artists were expected to follow. 1st Pass? Like all unemployed workers, artists were required to soil porosity make formal application for assistance. 1st Pass Metabolism? Only those whose work was judged by soil porosity, Project administrators to be of a high professional level were eligible for assignments to 1st pass metabolism mural, easel, sculpture, photography, and American Express Essay example graphic arts projects.

Project goals included incorporation of the arts within the 1st pass daily life of the immediate community when possible, a purpose that supported the larger attempts to effect integration of the Express example fine and applied arts. The cooperative and democratic nature of prints and printmaking processes was consistent with those goals, and held out the promise that a more democratic expression would be accessible to 1st pass metabolism a large viewing public. Out Of The Shadows Book? That . 1st Pass? would help heal the breach between artist and public that has become distressingly evident in the contemporary period. [4] Elizabeth Olds, assigned to the New York Graphic Arts workshop from 1935 until 1940, wrote that at least one purpose of New York Graphic Arts Division was to enable artists to produce prints in sufficient quantities that original works of tannen theory art would available for every man, woman, and child in America to enjoy art on a wide popular basis [5] The success of the New York Division was largely due to Audrey McMahon (1890-1981) who served under Cahill as regional director for New York and 1st pass New Jersey from 1935 until 1939. Although her efforts were opposed by Colonel Brehon Somervell, WPA administrator for New York City, who insisted that artists were . social parasites incapable of serious work and should not be allowed to obtain federal support,6 she succeeded in establishing the New York studio workshop on February 6, 1936. Outsiders Book Summary? Fitted with equipment for producing etchings, lithographs, and wood engravings, the workshop also provided materials and tools for making prints and 1st pass metabolism drawings. Easy to collier transport, and 1st pass less intimidating than paintings or sculpture, prints were popular with Project supervisors and public alike. Since etchings and salamander wood engravings were printed in editions of 25 to 50 impressions, it was obvious that more prints than paintings were available to be seen daily by 1st pass, a large segment of the public. Unfortunately, it was also true that such wide scale distribution resulted in an unfortunate tendency to consider prints and drawings less valuable than paintings which may explain why many of record have disappeared.

Most prints that are still available are from artists' personal collections of the five complimentary copies per edition they were allowed to keep. To insure an acceptable image and soil porosity appropriate theme, each artist was required to metabolism submit a proposal for review by a Project supervisor and a supervising artist such as Carl Zigrosser, curator of prints at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. If approved, a preliminary proof was again evaluated by supervisor and master printer in consultation with the artist. When judged satisfactory, [6] proofs were submitted for final approval by a committee of Project supervisors. While it can be assumed that Project prints reflect critical standards of project supervisors as well as artists' intentions, there is little evidence that changes other than occasional modifications to technical processes were requested. The most creative period of the Graphic Arts Divisions was 1937-1938 when technical processes were expanded to include color printing. Color lithography, initiated in 1937, accounted for inclusion of 23 color lithographs in salamander symbolism the 1938 exhibition Printmaking, A New Tradition at the 57th Street Federal Gallery. After 1938, color lithographs that incorporated as many as 5 colors were successfully printed by graphic arts workshops, and were of such high quality that they were in more demand than traditional black and white impressions.

Although artists were eager to explore color lithography, the process required complex and costly equipment available to 1st pass only a few. Screen printing was less expensive, easier to produce, and quickly attracted a small number of pioneers including Harry Gottlieb, Louis Lozowick, and Elizabeth Olds. [7] A screen print unit, established in 1936, was headed by Anthony Velonis fresh from his work with the Project's poster division. The demand for the two instructional manuals Velonis wrote that described the process in detail was so great that mimeographed copies were made available to artists nationwide. Because it required simple, inexpensive equipment, screen printing had immediate and widespread appeal. More important, artists printed their own images, thereby re-establishing the direct relationship between idea and soil porosity process that intervention by master printers in etching and lithography had altered. To distinguish it from familiar screen printing methods, Velonis and Zigrosser designated the silk screen process as serigraphy, a name derived from seri, Latin for silk, and 1st pass graphein, the Greek term for writing or drawing. Pioneered by FAP artists, screen printing soon became an important part of the vocabulary of out of book Josef Albers, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Frank Stella among others. 1st Pass Metabolism? [8] Harry Gottlieb in out of particular found that his images of factory workers were stronger and more effective as screen prints. Still working when the first version of this essay was in progress, Gottlieb recalled, in an interview with this author, how artists responded to the stimulus of the Depression and the sense of community fostered by the Project workshops. [9] A member of 1st pass a small pilot project, Gottlieb enthusiastically worked with Velonis to explore the medium's expressive potential, and held the first solo exhibition of American Essay example screen prints in 1940. [10] Although strong individual styles developed within this period, and 1st pass metabolism a sense of community emerged from the need to organize and speak as one political voice, there is little evidence of egocentrism among graphic arts division artists. Nourished by government support, Project artists acquired a collective identity, but more significantly, began to out of book discover individual identities, intentions, and styles.

Printmakers especially realized a sense of self worth that was derived directly from 1st pass their unique charge to create visual images that could be produced in the chaser collier editions of 1st pass metabolism multiple impressions and that were seen by the general public, a challenging and untried viewing audience. Inasmuch as most of this audience were members of the work force, the salamander dentity of metabolism printmakers inevitably aligned with that of the country's working class. While it is American Express example, true that the nation's unemployed were measured in record numbers, they were in fact the minority and, because the cost of living was lower during the metabolism 1930s, those people who had jobs were better off than before. [11] In addition, the standard of living in the United States was high compared with that of tannen theory Europe and England, with an annual wage of more than $1500 for industrial workers. 1st Pass Metabolism? Most FAP artists earned approximately $1100 a year which further emphasized their kinship with American workers. Because their government recognized their worth as contributing members of society, and as an important part of the outsiders book summary work force, printmakers developed a sense of self confidence that is 1st pass metabolism, immediately apparent in their mastery of new materials and processes. Although more relevant to salamander the 1930s, work and 1st pass metabolism worker themes were integral ingredients of American print vocabulary during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For example, industrial images were central to Joseph Pennell's 1912 etchings of the construction of the salamander Panama Canal. 1st Pass? As on-site artist, Pennell moved freely through the area observing industry on collier a colossal scale.

His preliminary drawings of the locks were so startlingly accurate that one of the construction men commented that the drawings would work. Following completion of the Canal series, Pennell turned his attention to the machinery of the fist World War, making meticulous studies in munitions factories in England, France, and Germany. He contrasted gun pits, furnaces, and forges with sketchy, transient small figures moving through and around overpowering machinery, unidentifiable and dwarfed by cranes and 1st pass steam shovels and forges. Whether his subjects were the Canal's locks, the Brooklyn Bridge, or the factories that turned out soil porosity, weapons, Pennell was completely absorbed in the wonder of work and declared: Work is the greatest thing in the world. 1st Pass Metabolism? [12] Placed in charge of the etching program at the Art Student's League in 1922, Pennell was an inspiring teacher who encouraged each student to search for an original, individual statement and, above all, to salamander develop good work habits. He led lively in-class critiques, accompanied students on visits to museums, and cautioned them to forego their persistent tendencies to imitate, reminding them that to copy is to invite comparison. [13] By demanding bold, original work, and to refuse to supply the market with the conventionalized art labeled what people want when in reality it was all they could get, [14] Pennell's teaching helped create a solid foundation for a new generation of printmakers who did not want to be viewed as illustrators but as artists who explored the 1st pass full expressive potential of the shadows printmaking methods. The origins of Pennell's ineffectual little figures are found in the landscapes of the 19th century Hudson River School, many of which include human figures as inconsequential elements all but invisible in an overpowering wilderness. These tiny figures, still in harmony with an unspoiled nature, predict the destructive effect humanity will have upon the environment as the luminous serenity of the 1st pass metabolism unexplored landscape will soon be obscured by steam, smoke, and the bustle of American Essay example heavily populated, industrialized modern spaces.

Humans, who intruded tentatively on nature in the 19th century, are the ancestors of 1st pass metabolism Pennell's agitated little people who are bewildered by the scale of surrounding derricks, forges, and locks which they have created but which possess a power they still do not comprehend. Human figures evolved from small people dwarfed by nature into the sturdy, confident the soil porosity workers in FAP prints. Pennell's preoccupation with work as a theme was logically echoed in Project prints in 1st pass metabolism part because many of the artists assigned to the New York graphics workshop had been students in his popular, heavily enrolled classes at the League. However, in the hands of soil porosity this new generation, machines do not dominate, instead they are controlled by authoritative human figures. Workers pictured in prints of the 1930s are not subservient to the machine but are convincingly integrated within their factory and construction environments. 1st Pass Metabolism? Unlike Pennell's romantic views of industrial spaces filled with monumental machinery, people in FAP prints confidently control their surroundings. Because artists were among the unemployed who were supported by out of the shadows, New Deal relief programs, they identified themselves as cultural workers and were, therefore, allied with labor concerns and practices.

This included organizing into unions to protect themselves against unfair hiring and firing practices by WPA committees. Like many labor groups, artists formed militant unions to 1st pass protect themselves against tannen theory, unfair hiring and firing practices by WPA committees. The reason for 1st pass, this unprecedented militancy by artists was that, as a social class, they were grouped with the large numbers of unemployed who were dependent on government relief. This was at least acknowledgement of their existence and connected them with the general society from which they had historically been estranged. But there was a price for this official recognition and validation of art as worthy of government support. Artists faced the open hostility of Express critics who were politically opposed to cultural projects and who accused them, and the agencies that assisted them, of wasting precious tax dollars on metabolism frivolities that could demonstrate no practical result. Many WPA supervisors were convinced that making pictures could not be construed as work and, worse, art projects were suspected of outsiders encouraging the spread of Communism. In addition, supervisory methods were stringent and, often, unrealistic, requiring artists to metabolism sign in at designated locations daily before 9 a.m., then return home or to American Essay example work, if they had an assignment, for the rest of the day. 1st Pass? They were obliged to out of book remain at home or their specified place of 1st pass work where they were checked on periodically, unannounced, by timekeepers. An artist who didn't answer the American Express door when a timekeeper came by metabolism, (relief recipients were not permitted telephones) was recorded as absent without permission. This posed a hardship for anyone who needed to leave occasionally even for tannen theory, work-related reasons such as procuring materials.

Anyone wishing to sketch away from home had to 1st pass metabolism notify the administration as to exact time and soil porosity place so a timekeeper could be sent to the site .[15] These tactics were degrading, unrealistic, and was evidence that WPA supervisors had no understanding of, or patience with, the nature of artistic activity. Because of 1st pass such demeaning stipulations many artists with meager means chose not to apply for relief. Others, including Jackson Pollock, were almost entirely dependent on the FAP for their livelihood and dutifully appeared at their assigned locations each morning. Pollock liked to work late at night, then sleep late in the morning making the early deadline extremely hard to meet. He was often observed racing frantically through the streets in pajamas to the time clock at his designated center to sign in with only out of the shadows book, seconds to spare. [16] Failure to meet the daily deadline meant that week's paycheck was withheld but in spite of these regulations, Pollock along with most FAP artists met the Project's rigid requirements and were grateful for the aid they received. Metabolism? Even more abusive, however, was the firing policy, begun as early as 1936, that stipulated artists must be terminated every 18 months to encourage them to seek private employment. This was a cruel hoax since it was obvious that the private sector held out no hope of jobs for artists. All too frequently artists received Project commissions, then when funding was changed or cut, were summarily dismissed with a final payment.

There were no criteria for tannen theory, identifying those to be fired; the process was entirely random and artists were discharged without notice, simply by 1st pass metabolism, a pink slip included with their paycheck. In the the chaser john collier summer of 1937 a total of 600,000 people were eliminated from WPA rolls and, in 1939, 40% of the artists assigned to the New York City Project received pink slips. Once dismissed it was possible to 1st pass metabolism request re-instatement to outsiders book summary the Project, but to do so artists had to declare themselves paupers to qualify for relief. Furthermore, they had to submit to an investigation of ato determine if the 1st pass metabolism applicant had property or possible means of support, however minimal, including savings or insurance, that might be converted into money. Those who qualified had to soil porosity wait in relief centers every day, along with other unemployed workers, for a job opening to be listed on the center's blackboard. 1st Pass? When a listing, such as graphic artist, WPA appeared, which was seldom at best, each artist there would rush for the first street car going to the job's address.

The first to arrive was usually hired on presentation of a relief voucher. Something people have different views about (try to out of the shadows find at least three). Interesting to people right now. Linked to an enduring issue. There are three things you need to do in the introduction: Grab the 1st pass metabolism reader's interest in the arguable issue. Use one of the introductory techniques in the table to explain the situation and summary argument. Make sure the reader understands the issue and why it is important (some issues need lots of explanation and description, but others are so well known you don't need to explain). Politicians? Is there an academic study being done? Reader: Who are the audiences interested in this question? What are the different positions they hold? Why are the 1st pass readers interested in tannen theory this question? Author : Who are the 1st pass metabolism people writing on this question? What is common ground between the authors and readers (audiences)? Constraints: What attitudes, beliefs, circumstances, traditions, people, or events limit the outsiders way we can talk about this subject? Do constraints create common ground or do they drive the people holding different positions apart?

Exigence: (Context of debate on the issue) What events or circumstances make us interested in this question now? What is the history of this issue and question? How has interest in 1st pass metabolism this question changed over time? What enduring values (big life issues) does this debate relate to? Part Two: Three or More Positions on the Issue. For each of the three or more positions, you need to write a separate paragraph. Express Essay Example? In each paragraph: Explain the position.

Tell why people believe that position. Give the best arguments for that position. Explain how those arguments are supported. You can also do some contrast and comparision between the 1st pass positions. That makes an out of the shadows, especially effective transition. For example: In contrast to 1st pass metabolism the idea that homelessness is soil porosity, caused by a lack of homes, faith-based homeless agencies often argue that there are relationship issues which are at the heart of the 1st pass problem. A third position suggests that it isn't lack of housing or poor relationships which are the root of the the chaser problem, but rather substance abuse and mental illness.

Sample Starting Sentences for Body Part Two. Start each of the paragraphs with a clear sentence stating the different position. 1st Pass? Here are examples of how to begin each paragraph: Position 1: Many people believe… What is this point of view? Which articles can you use for this point of view? What part of the article is helpful? What is this point of view? Which articles can you use for tannen theory, this point of view? What part of the article is helpful? Position 3: Another way to look at this question is…. What is metabolism, this point of view? Which articles can you use for this point of view? What part of the article is helpful? The conclusion of your essay is where you can tell your personal opinion on American Express Essay this issue. You can also explain why you are interested in this particular topic.

Your position may be one of the ones you describe in metabolism the body or it may be something you have thought up yourself. The Chaser? In the conclusion, you can use some of the same techniques that you use in your introduction. Here are some other ideas: Finish the frame story. Add the 1st pass final evidence you find most convincing. Tell the soil porosity reader your own conclusions and metabolism point of view. If you aren't sure what you think, then say that and soil porosity explain what you think are the most important points to consider. Challenge the metabolism reader to decide.

Outline the main things we need to summary think about when we make a decision about metabolism this question—what is important and soil porosity what is not. After you have written your outline, get some help by practicing talking about your paper idea in a small group, or in front of the whole class. Take turns in your group having each person share about 1st pass their paper using their outline. Then the group can respond to questions, comments, and suggestions. It helps if you write down your comments so the person can remember. In my class, I hand out the shadows, these questions, or sometimes write them on the board and have students choose one or two to metabolism answer. Is the introduction interesting? Do you feel you understand the issue and the shadows the question?

Do the 1st pass metabolism question and out of the shadows book the three positions match up? Is there a contrast in the positions? Are there other positions you think need to be considered? Is the context/constraints of the question clear? Is there other supporting evidence you can think of?

If your class does not do that, you can arrange it on your own by having a friend or even your parents look over your essay. Here is the peer editing worksheet I use in my class.

I start by having each writer look at their own paper, and then have at least two peer editors answer the questions. Underline: your question, the three positions, your position Wavy underline: author tags and citations. II. Write (at top of draft or on a separate sheet of metabolism, paper): What is best about salamander symbolism your paper. Questions you have for the peer editor. What you want them to help you with. I. Read the paper and make marks on the draft about: grammar and spelling errors what you think is metabolism, good where they need more support where they need better transitions where they need references, citations or author tags (or any problems with ones they have) where they need more explanation or description. II. On a separate sheet of paper write:

Intro : was the issue both defined and described? Anything that needs to be added? Was the the chaser john opening interesting? How could it be improved? Body : How well does the paper examine the rhetorical situation? (exigence [reason for this debate], audience [who is 1st pass, interested in the chaser john collier this issue], and constraints [situations and attitudes which affect the debate]) Is there any part missing? How can it be improved? Does the paper effectively summarize three different positions and explain what they are? Who believes them?

Why do they believe it? Does the paper give enough evidence for each position? Conclusion: Does the 1st pass metabolism author respond to the issue and salamander symbolism give an interesting perspective? Does the 1st pass metabolism author need to add anything? Most of the out of time, students are asked to write argument papers that present a particular point of view and 1st pass metabolism attempt to persuade the the chaser john collier audience. Sometimes that makes this writing assignment seem confusing. Here is the difference between this assignment and an argument paper:

Argument Essays focus on proving one point of view : An argument or position essay seeks to come to a conclusion and metabolism convince the outsiders book summary audience which side of the issue is correct. The emphasis in an argument paper is on the side the author wants to prove is best or right, so while the paper may talk about other views, most of the paper is spent proving one point of view. Exploratory essays look at several points of view in a neutral way. Rather than trying to solve the problem, this sort of paper explores the different perspectives of the problem and seeks to understand the cultural and social context of the issue. It is the sort of paper you would write before writing a solution paper.

An exploratory paper is 1st pass, common in businesses when they are attempting to find a solution to a problem and the chaser john collier need to get all of the possible perspectives and information available. Exploratory papers help you look at different audiences to help find common ground. This paper also explores the different audiences or groups of 1st pass metabolism, people who are concerned about this issue, giving their different viewpoints on the cause, effects, and solutions proposed. American Essay? In order to do this paper, you may want to narrow the issue you are thinking about so that you can cover the idea more effectively. Exploratory papers should examine at least three points of 1st pass metabolism, view : Sometimes there are two sides of an book, issue which are most often expressed and which polarize a debate. 1st Pass? In an tannen theory, exploratory paper, you are asked to 1st pass look beyond the obvious answers in order to find other points of view which can sometimes help in solving the problem. Express Example? For example, in looking at metabolism the issue of illegal immigration, you can examine the conservative and liberal political views, but you can also look at the viewpoint of the illegal immigrants themselves, the viewpoint of the government that the illegal immigrants come from, and the viewpoints of the people who live on both sides of the border where illegal immigrants cross. You might also consider the viewpoint of the border patrol employees. The conclusion of an exploratory paper can give your opinion: You will explore at least three sides of the issue, giving fair treatment to each side. However, in the conclusion of the paper, you will indicate your own position and why you are persuaded in salamander that direction. Whether it is labeled an exploratory essay or not, you will find this sort of paper in many business and college research papers.

The basic point of 1st pass, this paper is to let you examine all the different viewpoints on tannen theory an issue. Here are some examples of exploratory questions: What caused the Civil War in the U.S.? What will happen in the Middle East in the next 10 years after the 1st pass Arab Spring? How should the U.S. handle illegal immigration? What should we do with embryos left over from in-vitro fertilization? In a business, an employee might be asked to write an exploratory report about: How do people perceive our product based on different types of American Essay example, advertising? How do people use our product most often? What are the top competing products and what advantages does each have over our product? What are the different possible cell phone or Internet service contracts available to us and what are the 1st pass advantages/disadvantages of each one?
